Hurricane Season 2014 – Are You Ready?

The 2014 Hurricane Season began June 1 and will run through November 30. While Meteorologists have declared 2014 a light season for the Southeast, that is by no means an excuse to be unprepared. With 6 counties bordering the Atlantic Ocean, South Carolina is one of nation’s most vulnerable to hurricanes and tropical storms.

Knowing how to prepare for a hurricane saves lives. If an evacuation order is issued, please heed the warning. No home, boat, or hurricane party is worth your life, or the life of your loved ones. Pay close attention to warnings; listen to the radio and watch your local TV stations for weather alerts. Have a plan and follow it.

If you do have to evacuate, make sure to alert at least one member of your family, or a close friend of your travel plans. If possible, stay with family or friends living closer inland, instead of going to a shelter. Fill your gas tank prior to the evacuation order, take important papers, as well as cash (in the event ATMs are down due to power outage), a gallon or two of water, and some nonperishable food with you in the event of lenthy evacuation times due to heavy traffic.

Memorial Day – the day America humbly gives thanks to those men and women who lost their lives while serving in our country’s military. You and I can freely enjoy countless privileges envied by many other countries. Our Constitution grants our rights as citizens of the United States; however, let us never forget how these rights were earned by those who fought and died, so we may live the lives we choose today.

The traditional moment of honor is 3:00 PM on Memorial Day. At that time, please stop and give thanks. Pray for the gift of life given, for the families who lost their loved ones, for the safety of those serving now, for their families, and for our citizen rights and freedoms earned by those who sacrifice so much every day.

While we’re at it, let‘s do our best to not wait until after a service man or woman is lost to give our sincere thanks. Whenever we see a man or woman in uniform, whether military, public safety, fire or emergency, let’s strive to let them and their families know that we and our families truly and deeply appreciate their daily sacrifice.

Alien Clouds Over Columbia, SC?

 

Have you seen them? You know – those alien-looking yellow clouds blowing across the Midlands these past couple of weeks? Winter is (hopefully) finally over and here come the beautiful flowers and blooming trees, along with their means of procreation. Yes, plant love (aka pollen) is everywhere. Can you hear the sneezing? Why, I think I even have pollen in my shoes!

Ah, ’tis the season – of sneezing, watery eyes, and yellow, yellow, everywhere! Well, I’m off to find some local honey to help build my immunity to those pesky alien clouds …or so I’ve been told.

Ah, Valentine’s Day. The day we let our special ones know just how much we love them.
